The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination in multiple phases. The detailed syllabus for Tier I and Tier II exams is provided below.
Tier I Examination Syllabus:
A. General Intelligence & Reasoning: This section includes both verbal and non-verbal questions on:

B. General Awareness: Questions are designed to test the candidate’s awareness of the environment and its application to society. It includes:
- Current events, daily observations, and experiences in the scientific aspect
- Questions on India and its neighboring countries relating to:
- History, Culture, Geography
- Economic Scene, General Policy, Scientific Research
C. Quantitative Aptitude: This section assesses numerical ability and number sense, including:
- Computation of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, relationships between numbers
- Percentage, Ratio & Proportion, Square roots, Averages
- Interest, Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business
- Mixture and Alligation, Time and distance, Time & Work
- Basic algebraic identities, Elementary surds, Graphs of Linear Equations
- Geometry: Triangles, Circle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons
- Mensuration: Prism, Cone, Cylinder, Sphere, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Pyramids
- Trigonometry: Ratios, Degrees, Radian Measures, Heights, and Distances
- Data interpretation: Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar diagram, Pie chart
D. English Comprehension: This section tests:
- Understanding of correct English, comprehension, and writing ability
Note: Questions in Parts A, B, and D will be of graduation level, while Part C will be of 10th standard level.
Tier II Examination Syllabus:
Paper I – Module-I of Session-I (Mathematical Abilities):
- Number Systems: Computation of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, relationships between numbers
- Arithmetic: Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Square roots, Averages, Interest, Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business, Mixture and Alligation, Time and distance, Time and work
- Algebra: Basic algebraic identities, Elementary surds, Graphs of Linear Equations
- Geometry: Triangles, Circle, Tangents, Angles, Chords, Common tangents
- Mensuration: Triangles, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Right Prism, Cone, Cylinder, Sphere, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Pyramids
- Trigonometry: Ratios, Complementary angles, Heights and distances
- Statistics and Probability: Tables and Graphs (Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar-diagram, Pie-chart), Measures of central tendency, Calculation of simple probabilities

- Topics: Vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, correct usage, Error Spotting, Fill in the Blanks, Synonyms/Homonyms, Antonyms, Spellings, Idioms & Phrases, One word substitution, Sentence Improvement, Active/Passive Voice, Direct/Indirect Speech, Sentence Shuffling, Passage Shuffling, Cloze Passage, Comprehension Passage
Paper I – Module-II of Section-II (General Awareness):
- Topics: Environment awareness, current events, daily observations, and experiences, History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Policy, Scientific Research
Paper I – Module-I of Section-III (Computer Proficiency):
- Computer Basics: CPU, input/output devices, memory organization, backup devices, PORTs, Windows Explorer, Keyboard shortcuts
- Software: Windows OS, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Internet and Emails: Web browsing, downloading, uploading, email management, e-Banking
- Networking and Cyber Security: Networking devices and protocols, security threats (hacking, virus, worms, Trojan), preventive measures
Paper II (Statistics):
- Topics: Data collection, classification, presentation, central tendency measures, dispersion measures, moments, skewness, kurtosis, correlation, regression, probability theory, random variables, sampling theory, statistical inference, analysis of variance, time series analysis, index numbers
Document Verification (DV):
- Conducted by User Departments/Organizations after the final result declaration.
- Required Documents:
- Matriculation/Secondary Certificate
- Educational Qualification Certificate
- Caste/Category Certificate (if applicable)
- Benchmark Disabilities Certificate (if applicable)
- Ex-Servicemen: Serving Defence Personnel Certificate, Undertaking, Discharge Certificate
- Age relaxation Certificate (if applicable)
- Central Government Civilian Employees Certificate (if applicable)
- No Objection Certificate (if already employed)
Special Requirements for Certain Posts:
- Specific Physical Standards, Physical Tests, and Medical Standards apply to posts like Inspector (Central Excise), Sub-Inspector (CBI, NIA), etc.
Candidates must fulfill all requirements before preference submission.
Post Preference Submission:
- To be done online on the SSC website before the final result.
- Options once submitted are final and cannot be changed.
- Failure to submit preferences results in disqualification from post consideration.
Change of Name Documentation:
- For marriage, remarriage, divorce, etc., specific documents like a marriage certificate, divorce decree, joint photographs, and affidavits are required.
